Publishers Panel for Writers & Poets

Our aim was to help you start your writing year off right with our Publishers Panel. It was full of insider insight into the business of publishing in Canada. We covered queries, submission process and more. As promised, we were wowed by writers of all kinds at open mic. Enjoy and share!

Michael Mirolla

MICHAEL MIROLLA’s publications include a novella, The Last News Vendor, winner of the 2020 Hamilton Literary Award for fiction, as well as three Bressani Prize winners: the novel Berlin (2010); the poetry collection The House on 14th Avenue (2014); and the short story collection Lessons in Relationship Dyads (2016). Two short stories – “The Sand Flea” and “Casebook: In The Matter of Father Dante Lazaro” – are Pushcart Prize nominees. In the fall of 2019, Michael served a three-month writer’s residency at the Historic Joy Kogawa House, during which time he finished the first draft of a novel, The Second Law of Thermodynamics. A symposium on his writing is scheduled to take place in Toronto in May of 2023. Born in Italy and raised in Montreal, Michael now lives in Hamilton, Ontario.

Established in 1978, Guernica Editions has published over six hundred titles that reflect its commitment to tearing down borders and creating ties between cultural and social groups. Our main mission is to publish books that address social justice issues, discover and cultivate our innate humanity, and transcend individual cultures and nations.

We seek out books that are fresh, terse, edgy and self-aware; that dare to cross boundaries and tear down borders, and that speak to readers on a universal level.

Apart from our traditional series of prose, poetry, and essays, we house two other imprints.

The MiroLand imprint, created in 2013 under the management of Michael Mirolla and Connie McParland, is a place for our more commercial projects.
