Word Up November 2015

Hey, everybody! Word Up’s next event is on Thursday November 12, 2015 @ Unity Market Cafe & Studios. We’ll start at the usual 7 pm time and feature one guest reader followed by the ever-popular open mic. This month’s guest reader is Barrie’s newest Poet Laureate, Damian Lopes. From Damian’s website:

Damian Lopes reading poetry

From poetry to fiction, image to text, and print to screen, my work explores the impacts of emigration and technology on culture, the re-creation of myths after migration, and the interstices that result.

The author of three print books and two electronic works of poetry, I am currently completing my first book of fiction. I am the Poet Laureate for the City of Barrie, the second to hold office which I will hold until 2018. I am a writer member of PEN Canada, and a member of the Writers’ Union of Canada. I was the founding chair of the Barrie Arts and Culture Council from 2008-2012.

I served as web editor, and as a consulting editor, at Coach House Books from 1998–2004. During that time, I helped put our full front list online. From 1990–1998, I ran the micro press fingerprinting inkoperated, producing chapbooks, leaflets and broadsides by authors such as Nelson Ball, Daniel f Bradley, Christian Bök, jwcurry, MAC Farrant, Gerry Gilbert, bpNichol, David UU, Darren Wershler, and Alana Wilcox. For a short time in 1995, my brother, Dominic McIver Lopes, and I ran Caju Press.

Born in Aberdeen Scotland and raised in Toronto Canada, I trace my family over much of the globe, including the UK, New Zealand, Tanzania, India and Portugal. I graduated as a music major from the Etobicoke School of the Arts, and English major from McGill University. Having cottaged in Simcoe county throughout my childhood, I now live in Barrie Ontario with my wife and son, and cottage farther north.

Word Up looks forward to seeing you this month 😉
